Chương Trình Khoa Học Thú Y cung cấp dịch vụ cài chip điện tử để giúp chủ sở hữu thú cưng tuân thủ sắc lệnh mới của thành phố.

Sắc lệnh mới của Thành Phố Houston giờ đây yêu cầu các thú cưng phải được gắn chip điện tử, và học sinh của chương trình Khoa Học Thú Y tại Trung Tâm Nghề Nghiệp Nâng Cao (CAC) Alief có thể trợ giúp. Chỉ với $20, các dịch vụ gắn chip điện tử được cung cấp cho chó và mèo từ bốn tháng tuổi trở đi bằng cách đặt lịch hẹn với CAC tại địa chỉ www.aliefisd.net/vet.

Theo lời giải thích của bà Phyllis Sams, một Kỹ Thuật Viên Thú Y Được Cấp Bằng hiện đang giảng dạy môn khoa học và cố vấn cho FFA tại CAC, gắn chip điện tử là một trong nhiều dịch vụ được trung tâm cung cấp cho chủ sở hữu thú cưng trong cộng đồng kể từ khi trung tâm được mở vào năm năm trước. Có hiệu lực vào ngày 1 tháng 2, sắc lệnh mà thành phố mới đưa ra gần đây khiến dịch vụ này trở nên quan trọng hơn với các cư dân trong khu vực.

“Hầu hết mọi người nghĩ rằng gắn chip điện tử là để theo dấu thú cưng của mình,” bà nói. “Điều này đúng ở phạm vi nào đó, nhưng không phải như hầu hết mọi người suy nghĩ.” Những con chip nhỏ được cấy dưới da của thú cưng có các mã số được đăng ký trong cơ sở dữ liệu quốc gia để mỗi khi tìm thấy động vật bị mất tích, chúng sẽ được quét để tìm số chip, và cơ sở dữ liệu sẽ cung cấp thông tin liên hệ của chủ sở hữu để có thể trả lại vật nuôi.

“Tại chương trình Khoa Học Thú Y này, chúng tôi làm trước và đăng kí thú cưng cho khách hàng trước khi chúng rời khỏi đây.  Làm vậy là để ngừa các trường hợp chủ sở hữu về nhà và quên đăng ký số chip điện tử đó,” bà Sam bổ sung.  “Chúng tôi nhắc khách hàng luôn cập nhật số điện thoại và địa chỉ trên hệ thống này, để quá trình đoàn tụ của họ với thú cưng dễ dàng hơn nhiều.”

Các thành viên cộng đồng sử dụng dịch vụ của chương trình Khoa Học Thú Y tại CAC được hưởng lợi vì chi phí thấp và thời gian chờ ngắn hơn, vì tất cả các dịch vụ đều yêu cầu phải đăng ký trước, chủ sỡ hữu thú cưng không mất nhiều thời gian chờ xếp hàng, khi họ thực hiện tại các sự kiện gắn chip điện tử trong một ngày được tổ chức khắp thành phố này.

Học sinh hưởng lợi vì các em được làm việc với nhiều động vật và chủ sở hữu động vật khác nhau khi cung cấp nhiều dịch vụ chăm sóc thú cưng khác nhau. Bà Sams nói rằng bà cùng cộng sự giảng dạy của mình thực hiện hầu hết các ca cấy chip điện tử, trong khi các học sinh giữ và an ủi thú cưng, nhưng những học sinh Thực Hành nâng cao muốn tự mình học thủ thuật này có thể luyện tập trên ma-nơ-canh cho đến khi giáo viên của họ cảm thấy các em đã sẵn sàng. “Chúng tôi không yêu cầu học sinh thực hiện gắn chip điện tử, các em sẽ tự quyết định xem em có thấy thoải mái khi làm việc đó và muốn học cách làm hay không.”

Học sinh cũng sẽ có năng lực thực hiện các dịch vụ khác được cung cấp tại CAC, chẳng hạn như tắm rửa, lấy tuyến, làm sạch tai, cắt và dũa móng, chải và tẩy lông, cắt lông cơ bản và cắt vệ sinh, đánh răng, và chăm sóc ban ngày cho chó. Các dịch vụ được cung cấp riêng hoặc theo các gói.

Các dịch vụ Khoa Học Thú Y được cung cấp từ thứ Hai đến thứ Sáu trong năm học, học sinh có thể đến từ 6 đến 9 giờ sáng và được đón từ 2 đến 2:45 chiều.

El Programa de Ciencias Veterinarias ofrece servicio de microchip para ayudar a los dueños de mascotas con el cumplimiento de la nueva ordenanza de la ciudad

Las nuevas ordenanzas de la ciudad de Houston exigen ahora que las mascotas tengan microchips, y los estudiantes del programa de Ciencias Veterinarias del Centro de Carreras Avanzadas (CAC) de Alief pueden ayudar. Por sólo $20 dólares, los servicios de microchip están a su disposición con cita previa en el CAC para perros y gatos de al menos cuatro meses de edad.

El microchip es uno de los servicios que se ofrecen a los dueños de mascotas de la comunidad en el CAC desde que abrió sus puertas hace cinco años, explica Phyllis Sams, Técnica Veterinaria con Licencia Estatal que enseña ciencias y asesora a la FFA en el CAC. La reciente ordenanza municipal, que entró en vigor el 1 de febrero del 2023, está haciendo que el servicio sea más importante para los residentes del área.

“La mayoría de la gente piensa que el microchip es un localizador para su mascota”, afirmó. “Lo es hasta cierto punto, pero no de la forma en que la mayoría de la gente piensa”. Los pequeños chips que se colocan bajo la piel de las mascotas incluyen números registrados en una base de datos nacional; cuando se encuentran animales perdidos, se les buscan los chips, y la base de datos proporciona la información de contacto del dueño para que las mascotas puedan ser devueltas.

“Aquí, en el programa de Ciencias Veterinarias, nos adelantamos y registramos las mascotas para los clientes antes de que salgan de aquí. Esto evita los incidentes en los que el dueño llega a casa y se olvida de registrar el número de microchip”, añadió Sams. “Recordamos a nuestros clientes que se aseguren siempre de mantener sus números de teléfono y su dirección actualizados en el sistema, para que reunirlos con su mascota sea un proceso mucho más fácil”.

Los miembros de la comunidad que usan los servicios del programa de Ciencias Veterinarias del CAC se benefician de costos más bajos y tiempos de espera más cortos; como todos los servicios requieren inscripción previa, los dueños de mascotas no tendrán que hacer largas filas, como ocurre en los eventos microchip de un solo día que se realizan en la ciudad.

Los estudiantes se benefician al trabajar con una variedad de animales y sus dueños en la prestación de diversos servicios para el cuidado de mascotas. Sams dice que ella y su compañera de trabajo realizan la mayoría de los implantes de microchips, mientras los estudiantes sostienen y tranquilizan a las mascotas; pero los estudiantes de prácticas avanzadas que deseen aprender el procedimiento por sí mismos pueden practicar en un maniquí hasta que sus maestras consideren que están preparados. “No exigimos a nuestros estudiantes que realicen los implantes de microchips, queda a su discreción si es algo con lo que se sienten cómodos y desean aprender”.

Los estudiantes aprenden a realizar otros servicios que se ofrecen en el CAC, como bañarlos, expresiones de glándulas, limpieza de oídos, corte y limado de uñas, peinado y deslanado, cortes de pelo básicos y recortes de higiene, cepillado de dientes y guardería canina. Los servicios se ofrecen individualmente o en paquetes.

Los servicios de Ciencias Veterinarias se ofrecen de lunes a viernes durante el año escolar, con horario de recepción de 6:45 a 9 AM y entrega de 2 a 2:45 PM.

“Aunque no somos un servicio de peluquería profesional ni una clínica veterinaria, dirigimos nuestro salón de clases como si en realidad lo fuera”, dijo Sams. “Agradecemos mucho a nuestra clientela que está dispuesta a dar a nuestros estudiantes la oportunidad de atender a sus mascotas diariamente”.

Para los estudiantes, ofrecer estos cuidados les permite practicar interacciones profesionales con los dueños de mascotas, como programar citas y hacer llamadas para recordarles su próxima visita; también pueden presenciar y realizar servicios que no podrían aprender en un salón de clases tradicional.

“…reciben una educación práctica en la que podemos tomar lo que estamos aprendiendo y aplicarlo a una situación del mundo real”, dijo Sams. “Se trata de educar al cliente, pero comienza con enseñar a nuestros estudiantes cómo educar a nuestros clientes”.

Vet Science Program offers microchip service to help pet owners with new city ordinance compliance

New Houston City ordinances now require pets to have microchips, and the students in Veterinary Science program at the Alief Center for Advanced Careers can help. For only $20, microchipping services are available by appointment at CAC for dogs and cats at least four months old.

Microchipping is one of the services offered to community pet owners at the CAC since it opened five years ago, explains Phyllis Sams, a Licensed Veterinary Technician who teaches science and advised the FFA at the center. The recent city ordinance, which went into effect Feb. 1, 2023, is making the service more important for area residents.

“Most people think that microchipping is a tracker for your pet,” she said. “It is to an extent, but not in the way most people think of it.” The tiny chips implanted under the pet’s skin include numbers registered in a national database; when lost animals are found, they are scanned for the chips, and the database provides the owner’s contact information so that the pets can be returned.

“Here in the Veterinary Science program, we go ahead and register the pets for the clients before they leave here. This prevents those incidents where the owner gets home and forgets to register the microchip number,” Sams added. “We remind our customers always make sure to keep their phone numbers and address up to date in the system, so that it makes reuniting them and their pet a much easier process.”

Community members who use the services of the Veterinary Science program at the CAC benefit from lower costs and shorter wait times; because all services require preregistration, pet owners will not face long lines, as they do at one-day microchipping events held around the city.

Students benefit from working with a variety of animals and their owners in providing a variety of pet-care services. Sams said she and her teaching partner perform most of the microchip implantations, while students hold and comfort the pets; but advanced Practicum students who wish to learn the procedure themselves can practice on a mannequin until their teachers feel they are ready. “We do not require our students to perform microchipping, it is at their own discretion if this is something they feel comfortable doing and want to learn.”

Students become proficient in other services offered at the CAC, such as bathing, gland expression, ear cleaning, nail trimming and filing, combing and de-shedding, basic haircuts and hygiene clipping, teeth brushing, and doggy daycare. Services are available individually or in packages.

The Veterinary Sciences services are provided Monday through Friday during the school year, with drop-off from 6:45 to 9 AM and pickup from 2 to 2:45 PM.

“Although we are not a professional grooming service or veterinary clinic, we run our classroom as if it were one,” Sams said. “We appreciate the clientele that is willing to give our students daily opportunities with their pets.”

For the students, providing care allows them to practice professional interactions with pet owners, like setting up appointments and making reminder calls; they also get to see and perform services they would not be able to learn in a traditional classroom.

“…they get that hands-on education where we get to take what we are learning and apply it to a real-world situation,” Sams said. “It is all about client education, but it starts with teaching our students how to educate our clients.”
